Former city commissioner and prominent citizen of Palatka, Mary Jane Lawson Brown, contacted me about helping her with a history project involving making a booklet for her grandparents who opened the first African American funeral home and whose grandmother became the first African American licensed to perform funerals in the state of Florida. Though we may have this printed in the future – which will require more formatting – for now this is intended to be a digital ‘booklet’ that people can flip through and easily share.
As county archivist I love sharing local history, especially that of many of our prominent African American citizens of which we had many. This project with Mrs. Lawson-Brown goes alongside my physical static display for Pop Warner, a Palatka-born professional baseball player.
